Mother’s Day – love, loss and gratitude.

6th May 2024 Debra Hayes

Mother’s Day is bittersweet for me, as it is for so many others and it can be hard for me to grapple with the reality that it is our biggest retail event of the year and that I have to put my head down and run with it….and to be ok with that. My beautiful mother Shirley passed away too young – leaving behind her four children. I was just 12 years old and I would be forever changed. Mother’s Day took on a new meaning and forever will.

It has taken me a long time to appreciate that losing my mother so young helped me develop a resilience and independence that I may not have otherwise had. I have leaned into these strengths to help me survive and thrive in life and in business. Mother’s Day week is not just about hard work and selling flowers, it is about looking after the people who rely on me too and showing gratitude and kindness to the many mother figures in my life.

We all have special women in our lives that we can show gratitude for. Maternal relationships come to us in many forms – from our workmates who know us better than so many, to our girlfriends who are the first you call in a crisis and to other elders in our family who give guidance. For those of us that no longer have grandmothers or mothers and the many people I know that have longed for but have not been able to have children it can be a time of reflection over celebration.

My mother never got to meet my children and sometimes that thought is too hard to bear. However, each Mother’s Day (I have worked 29 of them!) when I am in my shop surrounded by kids, dads and my wonderful customers I think of how proud mum would be that I am not just a mum myself but that I get to be a part of so many other mum’s special days. My passion for encouraging thoughtfulness with flowers has allowed me to serve others and to spread kindness….there is no greater joy for me. My hope is that we hug our mothers a little tighter on this day and that the stars of those in heaven shine brighter, for if the latest world events have taught us nothing else, it is to slow down and appreciate those we love.

I have put together my favourites for a very special gift guide below and I look forward to all the happy smiley faces I will see in store this week, it really makes Mother’s Day so much brighter for me to share it with you all.
